Benjamin Franklin's Aphorisms

  • An aphorism is a pithy observation that contains a general truth.
  • In Poor Richard's Alamanack, he listed different aphorisms in which I will explain three of them.
    • The first aphorism I chose is To be humble to superiors is duty, to equals courtesy, to inferiors nobleness, meaning that you should always be kind or humble to people who are above or below you in class, ranking, or job positions. This aphorism applies to the virtue sincerity because it means to be kind to others.
    • The second aphorism I chose is If you would have your business done, go; if not, send, meaning that you should make sure that you have completed your work and if not then you should find someone who can. This aphorism applies to the virtue resolution because it means to complete whatever job you are assigned to do.
    • The third aphorism I chose is Industry gives comfort and plenty and respect, meaning that not wasting time gives you a chance to breathe, relax, and gain respect from others. This aphorism applies to the virtue tranquility because it means to be free from disturbance or calm.
